| A paleoplacer is a fossilized placer deposit. In other words, the unconsoldiated deposits originally formed at the surface by running water was buried to sufficient depth to lithify the sediment into solid sedimentary rock. These are often buried at depth and must be mined using underground methods. | |
![]() The paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand of South Africa have been mined to depths of 15,000 feet and has produced 40,000 tons of gold and 100,000 tons of uranium. | |
