Two very important geologic structures are anticlines and synclines. Both are the result of folding of sequences (packages) of sedimentary rock. They are produced when compressive stresses shorten and thicken the crust. Because the rocks have deformed ductilely or plastically, they are formed at depth in the crust where temperature and pressure is high.
